Congiuntivo presente - basics and irregulars
The congiuntivo presente is the mood you reach for when you're talking about opinions, doubts, wishes, or anything that isn't a flat statement of fact. The good news is that regular verbs are pretty mechanical once the pattern clicks. The mildly annoying part is that -are verbs and -ere/-ire verbs basically swap their typical vowel, so io, tu, and lui/lei all end up looking identical in the singular — you genuinely need the subject pronoun sometimes or context gets ambiguous.
For regular verbs: -are verbs take -i, -i, -i, -iamo, -iate, -ino. -ere and -ire verbs take -a, -a, -a, -iamo, -iate, -ano. So parlare → parli, parli, parli, parliamo, parliate, parlino. Vedere → veda, veda, veda, vediamo, vediate, vedano.
The trigger pattern I've been drilling is verbs of opinion, belief, and hope followed by "che": penso che, credo che, spero che. These don't take the indicative the way a plain statement would — the subjunctive shows up because you're expressing a mental state about something uncertain, not asserting it as settled fact. "Penso che sia vero" (I think it's true) uses the subjunctive "sia," not the indicative "è."
Then there are the irregulars, which just have to be memorized:
- essere: sia, sia, sia, siamo, siate, siano
- avere: abbia, abbia, abbia, abbiamo, abbiate, abbiano
- andare: vada, vada, vada, andiamo, andiate, vadano
- fare: faccia, faccia, faccia, facciamo, facciate, facciano
Notice essere and avere both collapse the singular forms into one identical shape (sia/sia/sia, abbia/abbia/abbia) — same issue as the regular verbs, just with irregular stems.
